My heart glows with joy,
not when my friends compliment me
saying "Kya mast lag rahi hain"
but when a little beggar girl near the signal
continuously stares at me for a long period
and then comes to me and with a giggle
says "Didi, aap bahot sundar ho."
That delight in her eyes, delights my soul.

but when a teenage stranger girl on a two wheeler,
passes by me, takes a U turn,
stops her vehicle near me
and then with a smile
says "Di, you look beautiful."

but when a kid vendor in local train
tries to read a few lines from my book
while I check out her collection of earrings,
says with a cheer
"Aap kitne pyaare ho
